Good Works

The fiber arts are synonymous with nurturing...

...so it is no surprise that many crafters use their creative outlet to benefit others.

At Knitting Arts we have been engaged in these Good Works for some time now. Owner & Knitter in Chief, Jan Hurwitz, is well-known for her generosity in her community, and by sheer extension of her personality has brought that civic mindedness to all she does at Knitting Arts.

To that end, Knitting Arts has set aside one Monday evening per month for those who would like to gather and focus on charitable knitting and crochet. The Good Works Group meets on the first Monday of the month from 6:00pm - 8:00pm at Knitting Arts.

Good Works Focus for 2007

Marie Stroughter continues to host the Good Works Group. Please join us!

Here's the line-up for 2007 projects:

January - March:
The group will work on items for area domestic violence shelters. Blankets and gender-neutral knitted/crocheted toys are especially welcome.

April - June:
The focus will be on creating items of clothing (wool preferred) for Afghans for Afghans and the Dulaan Project. Both projects clothe impoverished citizens of Afghanistan and Mongolia respectively. Vests, socks, hats, scarves and sweaters...we'll take them all!

July - September:
Think pink! Time to make hats and scarf sets for the American Cancer Society's "Look Good, Feel Better Program" for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Please remember to use only soft & breatheable fibers without embellishment for the comfort of the women served.

October - December:
Supporting children in crisis needing comfort, through Project Linus. What better way to wrap these little ones with our care and concern than in the form of blankets! Please use washable fibers only.

Good Works History

May 2004:  Knitting Arts hosted the Alta Vista High School Knitting Club.  The girls were given free classes and goodie bags!

September – October, 2004: Knitting Arts sold Chemo Cap & Scarf kits to benefit the American Cancer Society's "Look Good, Feel Good" Program.  Participants received a discount coupon for their efforts and the satisfaction of helping women coping with cancer.

November 2004 – January 2005:  Knitting Arts offered free monthly workshops to teach reversible stitches for blankets.  We collected the squares and donated them to our local Project Linus chapter.  Project Linus donates hundreds of blankets monthly to children in need.  Additionally, Knitting Arts donated a considerable amount of yarn to them to make scarves for their holiday fundraiser!

April 2005:  Knitting Arts held it's first "Scarf-A-Thon" to benefit the Courageous Kid's component of the American Cancer Society. Courageous Kids is a day long celebration at Paramount's Great America where children & families living with cancer enjoy a day out. Knitting Arts was proud to contribute approximately 75 scarves created in approximately 24 hours!

May 2005:  Knitting Arts hosted the teachers of Gallarza & Hammer Montessori schools & treated them to a scumptious breakfast & a free class to celebrate their contributions to positive education.

May 2005:  Knitting Arts once again hosted the Knitting Club at Alta Vista High School. The girls enjoyed free classes, and created some amazing projects!
