24 hours of knitting -- this is no yarn

In a world of telethons and marathons, a Saratoga yarn shop has come up with a Scarf-A-Thon.

Knitting Arts is hosting 24 hours of knitting and crocheting beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday and ending at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The goal is to create 550 scarves -- in red, white and blue -- in 24 hours. The scarves will be donated to the children who attend the American Cancer Society's Courageous Kids event at Great America on Mother's Day, said Marie Stroughter, education and special events coordinator at the store.

Scarves will be knitted or crocheted in washable yarns, all using the basic knit stitch. Beginners are welcome.

Crafters are encouraged to form teams of six to form a relay team to work on the scarves in shifts. Participants are asked to bring their notions, including scissors and large-size knitting needles or crochet hooks. Knitting Arts will provide the yarn.

Coffee and chocolate are among the refreshments the shop plans to serve. Prizes will be awarded to the team that completes the most scarves.

While 550 might seem like a lot of scarves to make in a day, Stroughter said that if the crafters finish those, they will start on another 550 scarves for the kids' mothers.
