Jan Hurwitz
“It’s so therapeutic,” Jan
Hurwitz raves. She isn’t talking about the latest Pilates program or new
spa treatment. Instead, she is talking about the latest craze where one can
explore their creative side. “Knitting is taking the world by storm,”
Hurwitz adds. And she is along for the ride.
Hurwitz’s passion began
twelve years ago while she was vice president of a successful high-tech
corporation. “I had long plane trips, so knitting made the time go by a lot
faster,” she admits. Once she found herself knitting more than typing, she
knew it was time to re-evaluate her career path.
So she kissed computers
goodbye, picked hp her knitting needles, and headed to the Braid Box, a
successful yarn store in the Saratoga area. A couple years later, the owner
offered to sell her the store. Lucky for yarn lovers, she said yes.
One year – and thirty
employees – later, Knitting Arts is a success. “We’ve been busy,” Hurwitz
beams. “People are always coming to check out the new inventory.” Besides
becoming “the place” to find that perfect color of yarn, people flock here
to partake in one of over thirty classes per month. “We are the best place
to get hooked on yarn,” Hurwitz boasts.
After a whirlwind year,
Gentry wonders what else Hurwitz has up her hand-knitted sleeves. “Taking a
weekend knitting retreat to Carmel with about thirty women,” Hurwitz
responds. Oh, what a successful web this well-knit business weaves.
